Weight Gain Affects Knee Mobility

Pound for pound, excess weight may increase your need for total knee replacement surgery, according to a recent study.
Researchers reported that a weight gain of 11 pounds boosts the probability of needing joint surgery for both men and women. The likelihood that a woman would need surgery increases 35 percent. For a man, the odds for knee replacement surgery jumps 25 percent.
Osteoarthritis Tied to Weight
In this study from Melbourne, Australia, researchers reviewed 20 prior studies that examined the relationship between weight gain and osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis, affecting 32.5 million US adults. OA is caused by damage or breakdown of joint cartilage between bones. Symptoms of arthritis include stiffness, pain and swelling most frequently in the hands, hips and knees.
The prior studies revealed osteoarthritis was more likely to develop with weight gain. Knee pain and stiffness also increased with added pounds. And people’s overall quality of life and ability to use their knees in daily activities decreased.
Lead researcher Anita Wluka, PhD, said people with arthritis should be counseled on ways to manage their weight. Dr. Wluka is with the Monash University School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine.
“We know that people tend to put on nearly 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) a year as they get older, but the good news is that there is evidence from previous studies that it is possible to prevent weight gain,” she told Medical Xpress.
Don’t Delay Treatment
Since there is no cure for arthritis, doctors usually treat the symptoms. Doctors may use a combination of therapies, such as the following:
- Increasing physical activity
- Physical therapy with muscle strengthening exercises
- Weight loss
- Medications, including over-the-counter pain relievers and prescription drugs
- Supportive devices, such as crutches or canes
- Surgery (if other treatment options have not been effective) (CDC)
It is important to stay active and control weight gain as you age. These goals will benefit your quality of life and help you maintain your mobility.
If you have OA, talk to your doctor about creating a health plan that includes regular exercise and a healthy diet.
