When is the last time you laced up your tennis shoes and went for a walk? A daily power walk can make more of a difference in your health than you could imagine.
Walking is the perfect physical activity for families
Walking is a lifelong activity that has multiple health benefits. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, moderate to vigorous walking can reduce anxiety and increase memory, sleep and brain function.
Studies show that walking can also …
- Relieve joint pain
- Boost immunity
- Fight obesity
- Reduce breast cancer risk
- Decrease sugar cravings
- Help maintain body weight
- Lower blood pressure
- Reduce the risk of type II diabetes
- Strengthen the musculoskeletal system
On a practical level, walking is an inexpensive activity. It requires no equipment besides supportive, comfortable athletic shoes. Walking is a good social activity, providing opportunities for conversation with friends and family.
“Walking’s a great way to work out because we can integrate it into our daily lives,” said Amanda Paluch, an assistant professor in the department of kinesiology and Institute for Applied Life Sciences at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
How much walking is enough?
A recent study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that walking or jogging for 30 minutes five times per week helps blood flow in and out of the brain. It does not matter whether you walk on a treadmill or take a walk in your neighborhood; the benefits are the same.
“Taking just a few more steps per day, that’s a great way to get started,” Paluch said. “A walking program is really nice because it fits a very broad population.”
Celebrate Family Health and Fitness Day
Fitness is a lifelong activity, so it is helpful to encourage all family members to stay active together. You are never too old for recreation and play, and there are so many possibilities!
Family Health and Fitness Day is June 10! This special day recognizes the importance of recreational activities and local parks in keeping everyone active and healthy. You and your family can join this initiative by participating in recreational programs and activities in your community. You can always begin with an outdoor walk at a park in your hometown.
