Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder is a condition where the connective tissue around the shoulder thickens and stiff tissue bands (adhesions) develop. This condition, also known as adhesive capsulitis, limits and eventually stops shoulder movement, even when aided by another person. Frozen shoulder is typically detected in older patients (40+ years old).

What causes frozen shoulder is not fully understood, but there are several factors, such as diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and cardiac disease, that increase the risk for frozen shoulder. Frozen shoulder can also occur when a sling is used for an extended period of time or the shoulder has not moved for whatever reason. Symptoms of frozen shoulder are usually a dull or aching pain in the outer shoulder and occasionally the upper arm.

Nonsurgical Treatment

The majority of patients improve with straightforward treatments, such as anti-inflammatories, steroid shots, and physical therapy. Over time, these treatments reduce pain and restore motion.

Surgical Treatment

If symptoms persist, you may require surgery. Most surgical techniques for frozen shoulder are minimally invasive and are performed in an outpatient surgery center. There are many advantages to surgery centers including better outcomes, lower infection rates, no overnight stay, lower costs, and the convenience that comes with a highly skilled staff.
